Consultation workshop to develop Vietnam's National Action Plan on Oceanic Caption plastic waste management

A consultation workshop to develop Vietnam's National Action Plan on ocean plastic waste management was held in December 2018, coordinated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam.

Management of ocean plastic waste is one of the important issues and a major policy in the Vietnam Sustainable Marine Economic Strategy to 2030 and vision to 2045.

At the Workshop, Minister Tran Hong Ha asked delegates to attend the workshop to focus on clarifying specific solutions to opportunities and challenges in handling ocean plastic waste on a global and regional scale. Some solutions suggested include building and completing institutions, policies and laws on plastic waste management; the financial mechanism encouraging the shift of growth model on the basis of a recirculating economy on the principle of reducing consumption, increasing the recycling and reuse of plastics; finding solutions for information data on marine plastic waste management, scientific and technological solutions; communicating to raise community awareness and help change behavior; strengthening international and regional cooperations to solve the problem of plastic waste pollution, etc.

In addition, Minister Tran Hong Ha also proposed that the Vietnam initiative could host the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting with the theme "Towards the ASEAN community without plastic waste" in 2020. Also in the meeting, Deborah Paul, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam said that Canada is proud to have a long history of cooperation with Vietnam in addressing common priorities related to environmental pollution and climate change.

Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste dumps into oceans around the world. Besides, people and companies emit about 100 -150 USD billion worth of plastic / plastic packaging each year. Thus, it is necessary to recycle plastics and cut down on plastics use.

Up to now, a total of 58 international organizations and foreign diplomatic agencies in Vietnam have signed the Code of Conduct for the Prevention of Pollution of Plastic Waste and committed to reducing the use of disposable plastic products at office.
